9 Night - 10 Days Customise your Ladakh Package

Overview

Ladakh is a rich cultural state so, we have made this custom in-house Leh Ladakh cultural tour itinerary for those who want to experience a subtle touch to its Culture And Heritage.

As you will soon realise after reaching Leh, one of the most popular activities for visitors to Ladakh is touring some of the amazing Buddhist monasteries that Ladakh is blessed with. Even for those less interested in the interiors of monasteries with all their religious icons and shrines, many of the gompas are simply beautiful structures, worth admiring in themselves.

Usually, Monasteries are built-in dramatic locations on the top of hills or ridges with some even constructed in or around caves, situated high up on a cliff-face. Being usually surrounded by lots of prayer-wheels, even just a walk around the boundaries of village gompa can be a very rewarding experience, allowing time for a moment’s reflection, as well as soaking up the Cultural Atmosphere of life in the villages, that just goes to say that no Leh Ladakh cultural tour is complete without these beautiful gompas (monastery).

In summer, villages are alive with activity. Everyone is busy working on the fields and the animals. Splashing streams boosted by summer snow-melt and lined with shady willow trees, glitter amongst the fields green with swaying barley. Beautiful houses with gardens of extravagant flowers nestle amongst the trees and fields, full of birdsong and the cries of the villagers as they work their fields.

    • After dinner, retire for the night.
Day 3- Back to Leh | Enroute Alchi and Likir

    • Alchi was abandoned as an active worship site and later came under the care of Likir Gompa, which we will visit next.
    • Likir Gompa, located farther up the side valley beyond the village, is approached via a path lined with Chortens, a great spot for photography. Notice the giant gold-coloured statue behind the gompa crowning the hill.
    • Return to Leh and relax after the day’s journey.
Day 4- Leh to Changthang | Merak village (180 km)
    • Today’s journey is a special treat to the remote regions of Changthang, the northern plain of Ladakh, famous for Pashmina production. The locals are welcoming, with a characteristic small grin and rosy cheeks due to the land’s harsh climate.
    • Start early in the morning due to the long journey and visit Shey Palace en route. Shey, 15 km southeast of Leh, was the first capital of Ladakh and holds great cultural significance. Opposite the palace is a large man-made pond with fish and ducks, a great spot for photography.
    • Next, pass through Chang-La Pass, the highest point of the journey, perfect for stopping and taking pictures.
    • Descend into the scenic valley of Changthang. After passing through a ridge gap, Pangong Lake appears, reflecting the stunning blue skies of Ladakh. The lake stretches all the way to Spangmik and the villages of Maan and Merak.
    • Visit Merak village, which has a small gompa and offers amazing views of Pangong Lake and the surrounding area.
    • Stay overnight in a homestay and enjoy a local cuisine of your choice.
Day 5- Merak to Chuchul village | Border of Indo-China (30 km)
    • Start your day with a healthy breakfast and head towards Chuchul Village, strategically located near the India-China border.
    • Learn about the history of the 1962 war, with a memorial at Rizang-La. Many locals work with the army as porters, helpers, or in road construction.
    • Chuchul is the largest village in the Changthang region. Explore its culture by taking a walk through the village and the gompa.
    • In the evening, choose to stay overnight in Chuchul or return to Merak Village.
Day 6- Chuchul to Tsomoriri and Korzok village (180 km)
    • Today’s journey takes you across barren lands toward Tsomoriri Lake, spotting Kyangs (Himalayan wild asses) along the way. Pass through Taklang-La Pass and descend into a picturesque valley.
    • This route offers a variety of landscapes and the chance to encounter Chang-pa nomads and local wildlife.
    • Tsomoriri Lake is larger than Pangong Tso and serves as an important breeding ground for migratory birds, including rare and endangered species such as black-necked cranes, brahminy ducks, great-crested grebes, bar-headed geese, and brown-headed gulls.
    • Korzok Village, with around 60 families and 70 monks, is the least visited village near Tsomoriri. It hosts the annual Korzok Gustor festival, showcasing cultural dances by monks wearing large masks.
    • In the evening, stay overnight in a guest house or homestay in Korzok.
    Day 7- Local Sightseeing
    • Today is for some serious local business, walk around the village, visit the Gompa or talk to a local about the place.
Day 8- Tsomoriri to Leh | Tsokar (white lake) | Taklang-la (220 km)
    • If you wish to visit Tsokar Salt Lake on the way back from Tsomoriri, allow extra time as the unmade road is slow. Spend some time at Tsokar before continuing to Leh.
    • The landscape up to Taklang-La Pass (the second-highest motorable road) is a visual feast.
    • After descending the pass, pass through prominent Ladakhi villages like Gya, Meru, Runtse, Upshi, and Kharu along the main highway.
    • Visit Thiksay Gompa on the way back. Thiksay is one of the largest and most impressive gompas in Ladakh, perched high on a ridge overlooking the Indus Valley. It was established during the 15th-century reformation of Tibetan Buddhism by Tsong Khapa. The Rimpoche of Thiksay is considered a reincarnation of Tsong Khapa.
    • Thiksay Gompa is famous for its giant Maitreya Buddha statue, a highlight for visitors.
